early morning dark

walking in the early morning dark
it's warmer today
my fingertips didn't turn into popsicles

alone

I remember writing my brother Pat
when I was living up on Lopez Island:
"I'm happier when the time spent alone
is greater than the time spent with other people."
I still enjoy my quiet early mornings,
sitting with a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper,
but my "alone" has evolved to include my little family...

Oh no! I can't get on FB!

Wow! Driving home and listening to KOMO radio, one of the updates was about FB having some problems this morning. I used to think the "Terrorists" are probably working on ways to disrupt us regular folks by messing up our banking, etc. Hit us in the pocketbooks, really get us mad. Mess with us like the Cruz Tea Party characters and shut down the government. But NO, I think a good move would be to make FB difficult to access. That'll really piss us off!

"Walk in My Shoes"

I heard this audio on KUOW yesterday, while I was driving home from my bike ride. Very powerful, very moving, from NPR's 'Snap Judgement' podcasts. "To the world, Richard was Washington State’s Most Wanted; a thief and a murderer. But to his chaplain, Chris, Richard was a sweet, well-meaning man who just wanted to be seen. Which version would Richard be remembered for?"

Kids are expensive

Nate and I were talking the other day and he told me
"I don't want to have kids."
I said "Oh, why?"
"Kids are expensive. I know I am!"

weenie!

I need to get some of those hand mits like Pat has for his cold winter bike commutes. And I'll put in some of those hand warmer thingys. These early morning walks, oh how I've missed ye, but I'm such a weenie! I remember Shirley and me going out to play in the snow when we were kids, and my fingers would get cold and start hurting after a very short time. I would end up inside, looking out the front window, watching Shirley building a snowman out in our front yard.

I walked from home this morning (green rectangle marker middle left) 3.62 miles in 1 hr/3 min (including a long break for a stop light on Interurban - blue rectangle, and a pit stop at the Tukwila Community Ctr - gray rectangle). With a pace of 17.33 min/mile. Not sure how I might use these statistics later, but this MapMyWalk app is cool.

walking in the Fall

Walking is still my favorite, but getting out on the bike this morning was like flying. Even with my red nose and cold fingertips, it just felt good! The only negative is that I don't take as many photos. The colors of Fall are introducing themselves now, so I will be walking more. Give me a cold, brisk, sunny Fall/Winter day and I'm a happy walker...

"it's the same feeling..."

I was just doing some prep-painting of some pieces for our fireplace mantel, and I was reminded of a discussion I had with an Art Prof way back when:
I was working on my Adding Machine painting, leaning real close, with a small paint brush daubing away on the Plus key or something. He asked me "but is that real painting?" I responded "I don't know, but I do know that the feeling I have right now is the same feeling I have when I standing back from a canvas and slapping on these large brush strokes of paint..."
That's how I was feeling when I was applying some primer to the edges of some wood just now.

Ooops...I wasn't really going 30mph that last stretch back to the house. The bike was riding on my car's bike rack...I forgot to turn off my MapMyRide. :)
Going to see SOS, the Society of Seven at Muckleshoot tonight!

14Sep13

I'm going to have to start a new blog with just the biking and walking stuff if I keep this up. One big problem with biking is that I don't want to stop. I just keep riding and riding. I couldn't do it this morning though because I have a 10am appointment. One time last Summer I ended up out in the Kent Valley when I was meandering along the Green River. I got a little disoriented, and I had to download a compass app to figure out whether I was going North or South. My brother said 'how the hell could you get your North and South mixed up...you were riding along the river?' I don't know, but I did...
There are a gazillion fishermen out now, with the salmon running. Yesterday, Inday and I let out some oohs and aahs at the same time when we saw 4 or 5 jumps and splashes out of the water by the fish. Sort of like watching the NGC channel.
This was from my ride a little earlier. With the coming of Fall, I can see some riding in the morning dark coming...

I'm trying to get in a little more climbing since the Kitsap Colors ride is coming up on the 29th. The last bit above with the red line was where I chose to come up 99 past the Homeland Security bldg instead of my regular route. And then I got to reward myself with the last little downhill coasting to our house.

Walk 13Sep13

Inday and I walked 3.31 miles in 56 minutes yesterday. Documenting it like this, we will be able to slowly get in better shape, increase our times, etc. My next goal is to get Inday Biking with me, and then some real hikes in this beautiful NW country...
The black dot above left of S 130th St is our house, and unless I'm biking, I will often drive to a trail head. Over the years I started getting bored with the first 10? minutes of walking before I got to the river or whatever.

this morning

3pm - This may turn into a Walking/Riding blog. I had some business down by Southcenter this morning, and I decided at the last minute to ride my bike. I cut it so close though that I didn't have time to set the Data and GPS on my phone. What I'm showing here is my Return ride only. The 38 minutes of this ride coming back home was only 22 minutes GOing. I was cooking, and I was only one minute late!

Bike riding vs Walking

My ride from yesterday morning was so nice! The Black River Riparian Forest area in Renton, with it's Springbrook Trail, was one of my first walks when I started walking several years ago. It remains one of my favorites, and it's also the walk I chose for Inday when she started walking with me. The thing with Riding a bike is that you are sort of Flying along (I usually don't take photos when I ride my bike)...I got in what would have been two or three of my walks in one ride. Looking at the Elevation/Speed graph at the bottom of the graphic, I purposely chose a short uphill climb at the 25 minute mark just to see what it looked like here. Yeah!! :)

technology

I'M BACK!
Wow! The speed in today's world with all of this technology is making my head swim. I just sent a FB Msg to a contact about our condo, and I got up to refill my coffee cup. I barely made it back to the computer and our phone started ringing. Whew! I sometimes get nostalgic for when I was up on Lopez, and I went to the trouble of burying my land line phone with it's 30 foot cord in one of the cabinets under a bunch of designer pillows...

metamorphosis

I never think about "before" pictures until I get around to some "after" pictures. Oh well. The old before-picture of our house was taken sometime before my little sabbatical from this blog. The yard work is still a work in progress...
